I've made tackling retail crime a priority

Crime is crime and retail crimes are not victimless – which is why I made tackling retail crime a priority.

Darryl Preston writes:

As Police and Crime Commissioner for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough I have visited many retailers across our county, both large and small, talking to shop owners and staff at a local and national level.

  • Theft – shoplifting – and burglary (including ram raids) along with abuse and assaults on shop workers has a significant impact on business owners, retail workers and indeed the wider community.

It impacts us all.

The point I always make is that retail – and business – crimes are not victimless, they are crimes.

Which is why I made tackling retail and business crime a priority – to assure business owners and workers the police will respond effectively.

  • As a result, Cambridgeshire Constabulary has a dedicated police resource embedded in the local policing team and I have funded initiatives such as Shopwatch.

The policy of Cambridgeshire Constabulary is to investigate ALL shoplifting offences

To expel a myth quoted by the Labour party, the policy of Cambridgeshire Constabulary is to investigate ALL shoplifting offences, regardless of value, where there are reasonable lines of enquiry.

If re-elected on 2nd May I will…

  1. Ensure tackling retail and business crime remains a priority in the police and crime plan.
  2. With record numbers of police officers, further invest in visible local policing.
  3. Continue to ensure police investigate all business crime where there are reasonable lines of enquiry.
  4. Hold the Chief Constable and wider criminal justice system to account for enforcing tough new laws of assault on shop workers.
  5. Hold the Chief Constable to account for implementing the national retail crime action plan.
  6. Continue to support the national work of Operation Pegasus, a partnership between retailers and policing, set up to centralise intelligence on serious and organised crime groups involved in retail crime.
  7. Continued investment for our Community Safety Partnerships to tackle further all business crime.
